When the shot has been good and "sometimes not so good" and the blood trail is faint, a quality tracking dog can make all the difference in the world.
|
Here at Hillock Kennels (pronounced hil eck meaning a small hill for we live at the top of a small hill) we are committed to producing the highest quality Bavarian Mountain Bloodhounds to be found in the United States. We accomplish this by testing for genetic problems, competing in tracking test when they are available, and real world tracking experience. Each year more and more states are allowing dogs for blood tracking and recovery of wounded game such as deer and bear. If you are thinking about getting involved with blood tracking with dogs I hope you consider the breed of choice for many professional trackers and foresters of Europe the scent tracking specialist know as Bavarian Mountain Bloodhounds.

Always trust the Nose because the Nose knows
|

The Bavarian Mountain Bloodhound is also known as the
Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound (this is what FCI's
translation is, Bavarian Mountain Blood Dog ( which is the
closest literal translation). Being that Blood dog is not a
smooth flowing translation it has been pointed out to me that
Bloodhound should be used in the translation of the name.
This translation in know way is an indication of a link between
the BGS or BMH as it is commonly refereed to by those
speaking English and the Bloodhound that most are familiar
with. A lot of the confusion about the name in English is that
there are no good English translations of
Gebirgsschweisshund. The German name is Bayerische
Gebirgsschweisshund. All Leash hounds are descended from
the original hunting dogs of Germany known as Bracken. All
pure Bracken dogs have the finest nose for following ground
scent and trail. They have a well developed will to follow a
difficult trail. The Bavarian Mountain Hounds ancestry can be
traced to around 1870 when Baron Karg-Bebenburg
successfully crossed the Hanoverian Bloodhound with the
lighter Tyrolean Hound (Tiroler Bracke) to create a lighter
blood tracking specialist. This created a more agile dog for
the mountains of Bavaria. At first sight, it is similar in
appearance to the Hanoverian Bloodhound, but is shorter and
finer boned than the latter. The only recognized club for the
Bavarian Mountain Hound was created in 1912 in Munich,
Germany.

Pups available from Overseas
|
There are several litters coming up over seas over the next
several months (summer 2008). But at this time I can not
recommend any. Also know that with the drop in the value of the
U.S. Dollar against the European currencies that the cost has
gone up significantly. We continually hear about litters so check
with us periodically if you are interested in importing a pup.

Club for Bavarian mountain welding dogs
If you have a male BMH of quality breeding we are interested in speaking to you. We have now used our male for 2
breedings and will no longer use that cross on our female. He will still be available for stud work with the right female. We
are looking for a new stud dog to use out of working stock for our next breeding. The dog needs to be FCI registered in
Puerto Rico (or willing to be), needs to be at least 3 yrs old ( so I can evaluate working abilities) and have had his hips
tested with a rating of an "A". If you think your dog meets these standards or could before fall of 2009 please contact us.

The BGS club in Munich Germany has formed a
world club. With FCI registered dogs we are
eligible to join. All of the details have not been
worked out yet. They are at a point though of
taking information for those interested. We need
about 50 people to get the club going on this side
of the ocean. If you are interested in joining please
let me know. I need your contact info and a copy
of the dogs pedigree. I am planning a trip to
Germany to meet with many members of the club
in Dec. I will know more details after that time.
Important information for all BMH
owners in the United States.
